China yet to fully explain defence plan

June 16 (Herald Sun): China continues to spend a very large amount of money to modernise and expand its defence forces but without explaining why it needs such a large military, a new study says. There had been much speculation China saw its interests as extending past South China Sea to Strait of Malacca, the Philippine Sea and the Sea of Japan.

“But none of that is to be found in China’s National Defense in 2010 and that is the basis of most criticism of China’s lack of transparency,” the study said.
