A small gift of warmth in cold wintry nights – staff of the Bureau of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, New Delhi distributing blankets to the needy and helpless people sleeping in rags on the roadside.
Delhi: As a bone-chilling cold wave took over the national capital, with the mercury dipping to a historic low, the staff of the Bureau of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, New Delhi have been busying themselves with a noble initiative.
For about a week now, from dusk to dawn, they have been looking high and low across Delhi, searching for homeless people sleeping on the roadside, pavements and dividers.
“From 10 at night to five in the morning, we drove across Delhi in groups of six or seven, and distributed about two thousand blankets to homeless people,” said Tenzin Gawa, a staff of the Bureau.
“Sometimes those homeless people, who were sleeping on the roadside pavements didn’t even notice as we covered them with warm blankets,” he added.
“We still have some five hundred blankets left, which will be distributed in slums this week.”
The Bureau also donated blankets in partnership with NGO’s like Ritinjali which are directly working for the wellbeing of the homeless and destitute people.
The free distribution of blankets constitutes a part of various programs and activities lined up to commemorate the “the year of gratitude” to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
The Central Tibetan Administration has marked the period from July 2020 to June 2021 as a year of gratitude to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Apart from Bureau, the Tibet House in New Delhi has also initiated a whole host of programs and activities, ranging from online teachings and lectures to essay competitions, to commemorate “the year of gratitude”.

With over 2000 blankets distributed so far, the free blanket distribution drive will continue this week in slums across Delhi.
