Feb. 15 (Sydney Morning Herald): Of the 2.434 billion people living in dictatorships last year, 57 per cent lived in China, according to Freedom House.
This is a striking juxtaposition. China has become the world’s strongest economy, on one key definition, even as it looms larger as humanity’s single greatest oppressor.
In the past five years the Chinese Communist party has trebled to 30,000 the number of officials working primarily on domestic political spying.
He points out that the party has reinforced its penetration network into the private sector, religious groups and institutions of every type.
