Illegal gold mining rampant on Tibetan plateau

Nov. 15 (Global Times): Environmentalists are observing a new, more worrying problem on the Tibetan plateau: the growth in illegal gold mining.


“Tibet is rich in natural resources, such as gold…the more serious battle of preserving resources is just about to start,” Tashi Dorjee, a volunteer who has worked in Hoh Xil.

 

In early Sept., police caught a group of illegal gold miners who had been illegally mining since 2008.  In 1989, authorities in Qinghai Province allowed the illegal practice in Malan Mountain in Hoh Xil.


Officials in Golmud (Tib: Gormo) city had handed out gold mining licenses in exchange for bribes.
